How to cancel a free trial before you get charged

To stop a free trial from becoming a paid subscription, identify who bills it and cancel through that provider before the stated deadline. Apple, Google Play, PayPal, and direct merchant trials use different controls. Before confirming, check whether cancellation ends trial access immediately, save the confirmation, and verify that no renewal appears on the next statement.

Record the trial terms before you cancel

Open the signup confirmation, receipt, subscription screen, or account page and record:

• the billing provider — Apple, Google Play, PayPal, a carrier, or the company itself;
• the exact renewal date and time, including the time zone when shown;
• the price and billing period after the trial;
• the account that owns the trial; and
• what happens to access when you cancel.

Do not rely on deleting the app, removing a payment card, or stopping use. Those actions do not necessarily cancel the subscription. Use the provider's cancellation control and keep the confirmation email or screenshot.

Cancel an Apple-billed free trial on iPhone

1. Open Settings and tap your name.
2. Tap Subscriptions.
3. Select the trial.
4. Tap Cancel Subscription and follow the onscreen confirmation.

Apple says a free or discounted trial that you do not want to renew should be cancelled at least 24 hours before the trial ends.¹ Treat that as an Apple-specific minimum, not a rule for every provider.

If the Apple trial is missing or has no Cancel button

Apple says no Cancel button or a red expiration message means the subscription is already cancelled. If the trial is missing, search email for an Apple receipt or invoice and check which Apple Account appears on it. A family member or another Apple Account may own the subscription, and that account must cancel it.¹

If there is no Apple receipt, inspect the card or bank statement to identify the billing company. A web signup, carrier bundle, Google Play subscription, PayPal automatic payment, or another provider must be cancelled through that provider.

Cancel a Google Play trial

1. Sign in to the Google Account that owns the subscription.
2. Open Subscriptions in Google Play.
3. Select the trial or subscription.
4. Tap Cancel subscription and follow the instructions.

Google explicitly warns that uninstalling the app does not cancel the subscription. Its general cancellation guidance says paid access continues for time already paid, but a free trial or promotional offer can have its own terms. Confirm the status and access date shown after cancellation.³

Cancel PayPal or a directly billed trial

For a PayPal automatic payment, open PayPal's payment settings, select the business, and use its automatic-payment control. Cancelling PayPal authorization stops that payment route; it does not by itself determine service access, money already paid, or the merchant's refund decision.⁴

For a trial billed directly by a company, use the cancellation path in its account or billing settings. If the path is unclear, use the contact route in the receipt or the company's current help page. Record the confirmation number and effective date.

If the trial already charged you

First cancel the future renewal through the billing provider. Cancellation and refund requests are separate actions.

• Apple: sign in at reportaproblem.apple.com and submit a refund request for the relevant purchase. Apple says some purchases might be eligible and that eligibility varies by country or region; approval is not guaranteed.⁵
• Google Play: use Google's refund flow if the purchase is eligible. Google says most Play purchases are not refunded, although a request within 48 hours may qualify depending on the purchase; after 48 hours, contact the developer.⁶
• PayPal or direct billing: contact the merchant and follow its refund policy. Use an unauthorized-charge process only when the charge was genuinely unauthorized, not merely a renewal you forgot to cancel.

Act promptly, provide the receipt and cancellation evidence, and describe the facts accurately. A quick request can help meet a policy deadline, but it does not guarantee approval.

A reliable trial reminder routine

1. At signup: record the provider, account, conversion date, paid price, billing period, and cancellation deadline.
2. Set two reminders: one several days before the deadline and a backup earlier than the provider's minimum notice period.
3. At cancellation: read the access warning, finish every confirmation step, and save the result.
4. After the date: check the provider's subscription status and the next statement for an unexpected charge.
