How to request a refund for a subscription charge

· Updated 2026-07-20 · 7 min read

To request a subscription refund, identify who billed the charge, use that biller’s official process, and keep the receipt and request confirmation. Apple, Google Play, a direct merchant, PayPal, and a card issuer each have different routes; cancelling future renewal is a separate step and a refund is never automatic.

Quick answer: match the charge to its receipt or account first. Use reportaproblem.apple.com for Apple purchases, Google Play’s refund flow for Google Play purchases, the merchant for direct billing, and the issuer’s process only when the facts support a dispute. Then separately cancel any future renewal you do not want.

1. Identify the biller before you request anything

Check the receipt, transaction description, and the account that made the purchase. An iPhone subscription is not necessarily billed by Apple: it might have been purchased through Google Play, a company website, PayPal, a carrier, or another payment provider. The correct refund route is the one used by the biller, not simply the device you used.

2. Request a refund from Apple

Apple says some App Store and Apple-service purchases might be eligible, with eligibility varying by country or region.1 Sign in to reportaproblem.apple.com with the Apple Account that made the purchase, choose I’d like to, select Request a refund, choose the reason, select the app or subscription, and submit.

Apple says to allow 24–48 hours for an update. If a request is approved, the return to the original payment method can take additional time; Apple publishes payment-method-specific timing and notes that you may lose access to a refunded item.2

3. Request a refund from Google Play

For a purchase billed through Google Play, use Google Play’s refund-request flow. Google says that within 48 hours you may be able to receive a refund depending on the purchase details; after 48 hours, contact the developer, which can handle refunds under its policies and applicable law.3

Google says a decision typically takes 1–4 days. If approved, most refunds are processed within 10 business days, although timing can vary by payment method; check the request status rather than assuming the credit has arrived.4

4. If the merchant billed you directly or through PayPal

Use the merchant’s billing or support page first, provide the exact charge and a truthful reason, and retain the response. For PayPal automatic payments, go to Settings → Payments → Subscriptions and saved businesses or Automatic Payments, select the merchant, and find its contact information. PayPal says you can also cancel the automatic payment there; that controls future payments, not whether a completed charge is refunded.5

5. Escalate to your card issuer only when it fits the facts

A renewal you forgot to cancel is not automatically an unauthorized charge or a billing error. First ask the merchant to resolve the specific problem. If the charge reflects an actual billing error or an unresolved purchase problem, contact the issuer promptly and follow its process. In the United States, the CFPB says a written credit-card billing-error notice should be sent within 60 days after the charge appears on the statement; payment types and countries can have different rules.6

Keep a concise refund record

Original example refund record:
Service: “video plan” (fictional). Biller: Google Play. Charge date: 14 July. Receipt/order: saved in the Google Account. Request route: Google Play refund flow. Renewal: cancelled separately. Status: decision pending. This record helps follow up on one request; it does not prove that a refund will be approved.

Save the receipt, provider request confirmation, cancellation confirmation, and any merchant correspondence. Check access and future-renewal status separately after the decision.

Cancellation and refunds are different tasks

Use the iPhone subscription-cancellation guide to stop an Apple or external renewal, and the free-trial guide to act before a first paid charge. A request for money back does not necessarily stop a future renewal, and a cancellation does not guarantee a refund.

How ManageSubs fits in

ManageSubs helps organize the subscriptions and dates you add or import. It does not read bank transactions, submit refund requests, contact merchants, cancel subscriptions with providers, verify charges, or guarantee reminder delivery. Use the biller’s official account or support process for those actions.
